View of Greenwich from Deptford Yard

From Boydell's 'History of the Thames' series, 1794-96, vol II, plate 17 [no. 64 in the series], p. 242. A view west from the riverfront of the Royal Dockyard, Deptford, towards Greenwich Hospital. This is framed as follows: on the left, by a frigate seen in starboard-broadside view as far aft as her quarter-deck, with a sailed lighter alongside and two small vessels moored-up in ordinary ahead, with only their lower masts standing; on the right, by another group of single decked naval vessels (sloops and possibly a frigate behind) also moored in ordinary. Other small working boats with men in them are included between.

On the right is a step forward in the quay with men handling bales and casks, one barrel standing beneath a hoisting or weighing tripod. A tiled wooden building with a lean-to arcade stands on the right, probably part of the crane house, the jeer of the crane protruding beyond. Through the arcade can be seen a 'necessary house' - a latrine voiding over the edge of the wharf. A high pole bearing a dockyard workers' bell protrudes up through the tiled arcade roof at the corner of the main building. In all Farington did four Greenwich views in this series: see notes to PAI8020, the larger-format 'View of London from Greenwich'.
