One of the Pensioners who had the task of 'showing' the Painted Hall to visitors. Two 'country cousins' stand behind him ogling the west wall representation of the Hanoverian succession. The inscription, lower right, adds a snatch of the 'patter' that the Boatswains of the Hall (as they were called) learned by rote: 'Here is George Prince of Denmark, and in the Prospective a view of St. Pauls, London. Sr James Thornhill in the Wig &, &,& .' In fact, Prince George (husband of Queen Anne) appears in the ceiling above the figures and it is the family of George I on the 'great west front' which Rosedale is thereby mis-describing.
