Portrait of a States yacht

Portrait of a States yacht viewed from the port quarter. On the tafferel there are crossed anchors, overall a lion rampant on a crowned shield and supported by two lions. There is a large figure on the quarter and two others on the side of the cabin.

The drawing is an offset, not rubbed on the back, worked up with a little pencil. Most of the stronger parts are offset from a clear original, which was itself perhaps an offset worked up. The inscription on the back by van de Velde the Younger throws some doubt on the attribution but there is nothing in the drawing to suggest the work of van de Velde the Younger. The slight fault in the waterline was not uncommon in the work of the Elder, although he usually corrected his mistake. Other works drawn on the same paper have been dated 1665. The yacht may have been built in 1663.
