Portrait of the ‘Eendracht'. Built 1653. Blown up 1665.

Portrait of the ‘Eendracht', 72-guns, depicted from the starboard quarter. On the tafferel is depicted the lion of the United Provinces. There are two bunches of grapes seen hanging above the frame. There is no date above the lion. On a ribbon on the counter is the inscription, ‘EEN DRACHT’ which identifies the vessel.

The drawing is inscribed in the lower left-hand corner, ‘Het schip Van d admiral d Hr van opdam 1665’. It is signed, ‘W.V.V.J’.

This work is one of five drawings (the others being PAH3859, PAH5015, PAH3861, PAH1770) in which the stern decoration of the ships has been executed accurately and in great detail using pencil and wash. The sides of the ships, however, have a dull, flat wash over them. The works are all probably based on offsets but are not seen in reverse. They have been approximately dated to 1665 based on the subjects and the watermarks on the paper.
