The Friesland squadron lying-by off the coast of Scotland, 16-26 August 1665

This is an unsigned horizontal format drawing. It shows ships, bearing up and before the wind. In the centre middle-distance is a stern view of the 'Steden', the ship of L-Admiral Tjerk Hiddes de Vries. The 'Stad en Landen', belonging to Vice-Admiral Coenders is in the left background. There is a galjoot in the centre and a snow - a square-rigged, two-masted vessel - is depicted on the left.

The work is inscribed, ‘Woonsdach smorgens de Wint N: N oost den 26 augustij 1665/ hoe de vloot haer venthoont esquadron vande vrieslen admerael’ (Wednesday morning the wind N.N.E on the 26 August 1665; the fleet here shown being the Friesland Admiral's squadron).
