The Dutch fleet lying-by off Buchan Ness, 16-26 August 1665

Here, the Dutch fleet is seen lying-by in a light breeze. On the right of the drawing is a starboard quarter view of the 'Omlandia' (den haen). Well out on her port beam is the 'Vrede' (identified by the inscription ‘vrede’). In the left distance is probably de Ruyter, with a crowd of boats making for his ship. In the left foreground is a starboard bow view of a vessel, apparently a snow with a single mast. Her square sail is hauled up. In the centre is a port quarter view of a galjoot with her mainsail brailed up but topsail set.

The unsigned drawing is inscribed ‘Woonsdach den 26 augustij 1665 ontrent 5 [altered from 6] uerren tegen den envont’ (Wednesday 26 August 1665 at about 5 o'clock in the evening).
