A council-of-war on board the 'Delfland' off Buchan Ness, 17-27 August 1665

Here, the Dutch fleet is seen lying-by in a fresh breeze. In the centre is a starboard quarter view of the 'Delfland', surrounded by a crowd of boats. To the right is a galjoot with her mainsail brailed up but her topsail set.

This unsigned work is inscribed ‘dijto donderach den 27 augustij 1665 en gedeelte vande vloot / soo de leijt en drijft’ (The same on Thursday 27 August 1665; a part of the fleet as it lay drifting).

An offset of the same subject is in the NMM’s collection, inscribed on the back in a later hand, ‘W vandervelde 1677’ (see PAF6774).
