A Dutch rear squadron going to windward in a heavy sea

In the centre is a bow view of a galjoot close-hauled on the starboard tack under headsail and mainsail half brailed up. On the left is a lee bow view of a ship on the same tack under fore course and close-reefed topsail. Other ships are in the background, all with pendants at the mizzen, including an admiral and vice- and rear-admirals.

This is a rapid and spirited drawing, which is similar to the Younger’s later manner but in Robinson’s view lacks his precision in some points. It has been dated by the subject and style. The margins have been lined with pen and ink.
