Portrait of the ‘Portland’, a 50-gun fourth-rate, built in 1653 and burnt in 1692.
The ‘Portland’ viewed from slightly before the starboard beam, with square decorated ports and, on the broadside, twelve guns on the gun deck, eleven on the upper deck and four on the quarterdeck.
This is a rapid but very accurate drawing, lightly rubbed on the back but apparently not an offset. It is signed ‘W.V.V.J.’ and inscribed in a later hand ‘The Portland 1678’.
