Racehorse with Carcass 7th Aug 1773
original art: drawing. The Racehorse is probably the vessel on the right hand side, since it was hosting the expedition commander (Constantine Phipps) and was the faster vessel. These drawings (PAH3939, PAH3970 and PAH3971) were probably the originals used for the engravings published opposite pages 60, 66 and 68 in the account by Captain Constantine John Phipps (later the 2nd Baron Mulgrave and, at this time, commander of the Racehorse), entitled ‘A Voyage towards the North Pole undertaken by His Majesty’s Command 1773’, published in London by W. Boyer and J Nichols in 1774.
