The ‘Tiger’ and yachts at anchor off the Isle of Sheppy.

On the left, in a port-broadside view is the ‘Tiger’ (de tijger) with the royal standard at the main. On her port beam is the ‘Cleveland’ (klevelant) and ahead of her possibly the ‘Mary’ (?maerij). On the ‘Tiger’s’ starboard quarter is the bezan yacht ‘Isabella’ (Isabella) and Lord Dunblane’s yacht (umblaen). On the right is the ‘Henrietta’ (henieitje), Captain Crow in the ‘Kitchen’ (kroo) and another yacht, possibly the ‘Charlotte’ (des…l…t). The Isle of Sheppey (schepheij) is depicted in the distance.

The Elder made a series of over eighty numbered drawings of Charles II’s visit to the newly built ‘Tiger’ at Woolwich on 17-27 August 1681 before she sailed for the Mediterranean under Lord Charles Berkeley. After dining on board they sailed down river to Sheerness and Chatham, the King returning up the Thames the following day in the accompanying yachts. Few early numbers in the series are known, but nearly all those from numbers sixty-seven to eighty-six are either in the Boymans Museum, Rotterdam, or the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. This one is number ‘42’, altered from ‘43’.

PAF6939 is number ‘64’, altered from ‘65’, and Robinson relates a third unnumbered one to the series (PAF6940).
