H.M. 'Ocean', 2nd Rate. Union at the Main off Gibraltar with tenders
Hendrik Kobell was the eldest and most important of a family of artists originating in Rotterdam. He produced paintings and drawings, but was of considerable importance as an etcher, producing some twenty plates. An old, faint ink inscription on the back of the drawing identifies both the ship and the artist. Although the circumstances of its being made are not known it is likely that the drawing dates from Kobell's stay in England, possibly a commission for an English naval officer.
