Cape St Vincent. The Nile. Sir Edward Berry, Captain of his Majesty's Ship the Vanguard and first Captain to Admiral Lord Nelson

A half-length portrait of Edward Berry (1768–1831) in captain’s undress uniform, under three years’ seniority, 1795–1812, holding his gloved right hand to his chest. The portrait is surmounted by flags of Spain, Britain and France, lettered on a ribbon to the left, ‘14th Feby. 1797 Cape St. Vincent’, and to the right, ‘The Nile, 1 Augt. 1798’, referring to battles in which Berry had fought. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘Sir Edward Berry, Captain of his Majesty’s Ship the Vanguard, and first Captain to Admiral Lord Nelson.’ Also lettered with the production details and the publication line: ‘Painted by H. Singleton. / Engraved by G. Keating. / London. Published March 1, 1799 by G. Keating 18 Warwick Street, Golden Square.’ This print was engraved by George Keating after a portrait by Henry Singleton. It was published by Keating on 1 March 1799 as a pair to his earlier print of Nelson (see PAG6668), published the previous year. (Updated June 2019.)
