Portrait of a small Dutch frigate

Portrait of a small Dutch frigate viewed from the port broadside, drying sails, with courses topsails and spritsails loosed, and a weyschuit and boat alongside. On the broadside it has eight guns on the gun deck and two on the quarterdeck. The hull is a faint offset, untouched by pencil, and the masts and sails, also offset, have been strengthened with thick pencil. A light but bold wash has been added to the sails, hull and the figures.

The suggested date is based on the watermark, but the masts and sails may have been done ten years later.
