Portrait of the ‘Geloof’, built in 1661 and last mentioned in 1674.

The ‘Geloof’, viewed from the port bow and showing the lower masts, the courses furled and the yards a-cockbill, and the topsails stowed. Bowsprit and sprit top are also shown and there are a number of figures on deck. The ports on the broadside are depicted showing, thirteen on the gundeck, around eleven on the upper deck, and four on the quarterdeck.

Inscribed in pencil ‘Het geloof’ and in ink ‘Het geloof, by Petter salmony/ gevoert 1665’ (the ‘Geloof’ commanded by Pieter Salmonsz, 1665) though he is only recorded as commanding the ‘Kampen’ in that year. The drawing is signed in ink ‘W.V.V.J’, with the date 1661 added in brown ink.

There is a similar and probably more accurate drawing of the ‘Geloof’ in the V&A (4670) and a quarter view, signed by the Younger, was noted by Robinson in 1958 as in the Pole collection, Antony House, Torpoint.
