A Dutch ship in chase of an English ship, 1673

On the right is an English ship in starboard-bow view, with a flag (possibly a Union) at the main, firing her stern chase. On her weather quarter, to the left, a Dutch ship with a striped flag at the main returns the fire. The smoke of a battle appears in the centre distance and the subject may be an incident in the duel between Cornelis Tromp and Sir Edward Spragge at the Battle of the Texel in 1673. In this case the ships would be the respective flagships ‘Gouden Leeuw’ (left) and the ‘Royal Prince’.

A free wash drawing over light pencil signed and inscribed in brown ink ‘W.V.V.J.’ and ‘1673’.
