Sir George Bridges Rodney Bart. Admiral of the White
A three-quarter-length portrait of George Bridges Rodney (bap. 1718, d. 1792) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–1787, leaning his right hand on the fluke of an anchor in front of an overhanging cliff and a view of the sea. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘Sir George Bridges Rodney Bart. Admiral of the White.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds. / Engraved by W. Dickinson. / London. Published May 15 1780 by Dickinson & Watson, No. 158 New Bond Street.’ This portrait was engraved by William Dickinson after Joshua Reynolds’s oil painting of 1756–9, which is now at Petworth. Dickinson has updated the sitter’s uniform from the undress pattern of 1748 to the full-dress pattern of 1767. The print was published by Dickinson and his business partner Thomas Watson on 15 May 1780. Another printmaker, James Watson, had previously engraved Reynolds’s portrait of Rodney in 1762 (see PAG6409). There are a number of differences between Watson’s print and Dickinson’s, including the alterations to the uniform. (Updated May 2019.)
