John Earl of St Vincent, Admiral of the Red & Gen'l of Marines F.R.S. &c.&c.&c
A full-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1812–1825, and peer’s robes with the collar of the Order of the Bath and a naval gold medal for the Battle of Cape St Vincent, holding a sword in his left hand and papers lettered ‘Naval […]’ in his right. He stands in an interior with a table to his right, covered with a table cloth, books, a globe and papers. There is a swag of drapery in the background on the right and a view of a naval engagement on the left. The naval engagement represents the Battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797, in which St Vincent’s fleet defeated the Spanish. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘John, Earl of St Vincent, Admiral of the Red & Genl of Marines F.R.S. &c. &c. &c.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Painted by Sir W. Beechey, R.A. / Engraved by C. Turner. / London Pubd. Novr. 11. 1816, by C. Turner, 50, Warren St. Fitzroy Square.’ This portrait was engraved by Charles Turner after William Beechey’s oil painting of 1807, which was painted for (and is still owned by) the Fishmongers’ Company. The print was published by Turner himself on 11 November 1816. Earl St Vincent was admitted as an honorary freeman of the Fishmonger’s Company on 1 August 1801. (Updated June 2019.)
