Honble Samuel Barrington. Admiral of the White
A half-length portrait of Samuel Barrington (1729–1800) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–1783. Lettered underneath the image with the title: ‘Honble. Samuel Barrington, Admiral of the White. Presented to Greenwich Hospital by the Hon. Shute, Bishop of Durham.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, P. R. A. / Engraved by H. T. Ryall. / Fisher, Son & Co. London & Paris.’ This portrait was engraved by Henry Thomas Ryall after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds in the Greenwich Hospital Collection (see BHC2534). As the inscription on this print records, Reynolds’s portrait was presented to Greenwich Hospital by the sitter’s younger brother Shute Barrington, Bishop of Durham. This print was published by Fisher, Son and Company. It is a later reprint, from the plate engraved for E. H. Locker's 'Memoirs of Celebrated Naval Commanders...' (1831) and originally published by Harding and Lepard on 1 June 1831. (Updated April 2019.)
