The Rt Honble Earl St Vincent First Lord of the Admiralty. European Magazine
An oval bust-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘The Rt. Honble. Earl St Vincent / First Lord of the Admiralty.’ Also lettered with the production and publication details: ‘European Magazine / Abbot Pinxt. / Ridley sc. / Pub. by J. Sewell 32 Cornhill, Sep. 1 1801.’ This portrait was engraved by William Ridley after Lemuel Francis Abbott’s oil painting, probably painted around November 1795, which is now in the National Portrait Gallery. The print was published by John Sewell as an illustration in the ‘European Magazine, and London Review’, volume 40 (July–December 1801), opposite page 83, alongside a biography of the sitter (pp. 83–5). (Updated June 2019.)
