Lieutenant Peter Willemoes of the Royal Danish Navy (1783-1808)
A half-length portrait in profile to the right, showing Willemoes in lieutenant's uniform of the Royal Danish Navy.
At the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, Willemoes, then only 17, commanded a raft armed with small guns that he placed under the stern of Nelson's flagship, the 'Elephant' (74). Nelson commended in him for his bravery after the battle. In 1808 he was killed in the Battle of Zealand Point when his ship was driven onto a sandbar by the British and heavily bombarded.
