Sailing vessel H.M.S. Fair Rosamond (ex-slaver Dos Amigos)
A pen and ink drawing depicting HMS 'Fair Rosamond'.
The 'Fair Rosamond' had been a Brazilian slave ship, the 'Dos Amigos', which carried Africans between West Africa and Brazil until about 1827. It was captured by the Royal Navy, and converted to the 'Fair Rosamond'. Ex-slave ships, often speedy and with a shallow draught, made extremely effective anti-slavery vessels.
Lubbock wrote many books on sailing ships, including 'Cruisers, corsairs and slavers', published posthumously in 1993.
