The Rt. Hon. Saml. Lord Viscount Hood
An oval bust-length portrait of Samuel Hood (1724–1816) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1787–1795, and a wig. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title, ‘The Rt. Honble. Saml. Lord Viscount Hood, Admiral of the White Squadron & Governor of Greenwich Hospital.’ Also lettered with the publication details: ‘Hickel Pinx. / Ridley sc. / Pub. by I. Gold, Shoe Lane, June 1, 1804.’ This portrait was engraved by William Ridley in 1804 after an oil painting by Anton Hickel, now at Loders Court. It was published by Joyce Gold on 1 June 1804 as an illustration in the ‘Naval Chronicle’, volume 11, opposite page 400. (Updated May 2019.)
