Richd. Rodney Bligh Esqr
An oval bust-length portrait of Richard Rodney Bligh (1737–1821) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1795–1812. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title, ‘Richd. Rodney Bligh Esqr. / Admiral of the Blue Squadron.’ Also lettered with the production details and the publication line: ‘Opie Pinxt. / Ridley sc. / Pub. by I. Gold, 103 Shoe Lane, 1 July 1805.’ This portrait was engraved by William Ridley after John Opie’s oil painting of 1797 (private collection). The print was published by Joyce Gold, the publisher of the ‘Naval Chronicle’, in July 1805. It appeared as an illustration in volume 13 of the ‘Naval Chronicle’ (January–June 1805) on page 425, together with ‘Biographical Memoirs of Richard Rodney Bligh, Esq. Admiral of the Blue Squadron’ (pp. 425–30). (Updated May 2019.)
