Sir John Leake Knt. Admiral of the Fleet, &c
An oval bust-length portrait of John Leake (1656–1720) in a velvet coat and wig. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title: ‘Sir John Leake Knt. / Admiral of the Fleet &c.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘H. R. Cook sculp. / Published 31st October 1806 by Joyce Gold, 103, Shoe Lane Fleet Street.’ This portrait was engraved by Henry Richard Cook in 1806 after Godfrey Kneller’s three-quarter-length oil painting, produced in either 1705 or 1712 (see BHC2835). Kneller’s painting was first engraved in 1722 by John Faber the Younger (see PAF3317). Cook’s print was published by Joyce Gold on 31 October 1806 as an illustration in the ‘Naval Chronicle’, volume 16, opposite page 441, where it appeared alongside a ‘Biographical Memoir of the Late Sir John Leake, Knt. Admiral of the Fleet, &c.’ (pp. 441–79). (Updated May 2019.)
