Portrait of an East India Company Captain, circa 1690
Both artist and sitter are unidentified. The officer wears a fawn coat with gold braid bands at the buttonholes, a white full-bottomed wig, and a blue silk drape around his waist. He holds a pair of dividers in his right hand which rests on a terrestrial globe. In the left background is a ship flying the East India Company’s ensign. Parts of the picture are faced with mulberry paper to stabilize the surface.
