'The Last Supper'

Engraving of the Last Supper by P.W. Tomkins after Jacopo da Pontormo. It depicts the last supper Jesus shared with his disciples before his arrest and crucifiction (John 13:21). The print shows the moment Jesus announces that one of them would betray him. The individual reactions of the apostles are vividly portrayed; Saint John's position with Jesus's arm around his neck, and a dish in front of him can be seen as a prefiguration of his behading and the presentation of his head on a silver dish.

Below the print is inscribed "With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer. For I say to you, I will no more eat thereof until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God" (Luke 22:16). The Last Supper also marked the moment of the institution of the Eucharist, now considered as one of the central acts of Christian worship.
