Portrait of a naval officer, ca.1740
A three-quarter-length portrait slightly to the left showing the unidentified sitter in a blue coat with gold braiding a button and an unusual buff waistcoat (presumably designed for use at sea) also sporting gold braid and buttons and lined with thick scarlet material. His right hand is thrust into his waistcoat; his left elbow rests on an anchor fluke and he holds a telescope in his left hand. A small warship can be seen in the left background.
