'Gouri descending to the Lake of Oodipoor'
'Goori descending to the Lake of Oodipoor' by Edward Goodal after William Purser. A procession, involving two elephants, making its way down the steps into the lake is depicted in the foreground. On the lake a number of boats are visible.
Gouri is another name for Parvati, wife of Siva, while Oodipoor is now better known as Udaipur, city of lakes, in Rajasthan. Initially part of the Mughal Empire, Udaipur came under British rule in 1818.
A number of members of both the Herschel and the Stewart family worked for all or some part of their working lives in India and so images from there had particular relevant for and interest to them.
This print is published by the firm Smith, Elder & Co. The brother of Margaret Brodie Herschel (nee Stewart), Peter Stewart worked for Smith, Elder & Co as a printer.
