Portrait of a gentleman, about 1780
A half-length portrait to the left, showing the unknown sitter in a grey coat and waistcoat with gold buttons and wearing a tie wig. He sits at a table with his right hand resting on an upright quarto volume, inscribed 'Cook's Voyage Vol. I'. When presented in 1957 it was suggested the sitter might be John Hawkesworth, whose 1773 'Account of the Voyages undertaken ... for making discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere...' included Cook's first. The facial likeness to Hawkesworth is quite close to that of his mezzotint portrait (1769-72) after Reynolds, though that lacks the chin dimple. However, Hawkesworth died in November 1773 aged 58, and if intended to be him this portrait would have to be both posthumous and with the volume retitled - since his 'Account' was never called 'Cook's Voyage'. It is more probably either a later publisher of an edition of Cook's second or third voyages, the latter first published in 1784, or perhaps one of the civilian scientists involved in them (though not Johann Forster on the second).
