The Canada Dock
Signed by artist and dated, lower left. This view is probably intended to be the Canada Branch Dock No. 3 at Liverpool, a special coaling dock which had a large coal hoist, though whether it looked anything like the structure shown in the background remains to be clarified. It is certainly not the Canada Dock in Rotherhithe,London, part of the former Surrey Commercial Dock complex, which had no such structures and was primarily a timber dock. The wartime dazzle-paint design on the ship on the left appears to be imaginary, not one used on a particular vessel. [BTodd/PvdM 1/13]
