'View of the Fleet, which brought home his Majesty King Charles the IId in May 1660'. [Royal visit to the fleet in the Thames Estuary, 1672]
Print. Above the title this bears a dedication to 'Morgan Morgan of Lanrumney in Monmouth-shire' and the title itself is an interesting historical mistake made when the image was engraved, suggesting very early misunderstanding. It is in fact from BHC0299, 'A Royal Visit to the fleet in the Thames Estuary, 1672', presumably when that was in possession of its first owner, an unnamed 'nobleman' about 1715, or the next, a London merchant called Mr Stone (as noted in both cases by George Vertue), with whose family it remained until 1892. The British Museum has the copy that belonged to its founder, Sir Hans Sloane, who was also one of the subscribers to the engraver Elisha Kirkall's series of 'Sixteen Marine Pieces', engraved in the early 18th century, all of which have Latin title inscriptions. It has been suggested that the lettering on this print may be a change from a similar original Latin one but only this version is known, so it seems more likely that it was separately engraved and never part of that project. See PAG8366 for another hand-coloured copy. [PvdM 6/22]
