The Battle of Bishops Court, 28 February 1760: the aftermath of the action

A view of the aftermath of the frigate battle during which Captain John Elliot brought to action the privateer François Thurot, who had been raiding the coast of Ireland in 1760 during the Seven Years' War. Thurot was killed and his ships captured.

Inscribed: “To the Worshipful Corporation & Merchants of Liverpool, this Print being a View of both Squadrons Lying in Ramsay Bay in the Isle of Man, after the defeat of the Daring Monsr Thurot who was Killed in the Action the 28th of Feby 1760, is most humbly Inscribed by Gentlemen Your most Obedt Servant Richard Wright. Engraved from the Original Painting Drawn from the Real Ships by Permission of Capt Elliot, in the Collection of a Noble-man."

Ship particulars are given in smaller type directly below the picture. From left are shown: "Aeolus", Capt Elliot, 32 guns, starboard-bow on; her prize, "Marshall Belleisle", Monsr Thurot, 50 guns, in port-broadside view; "La Terpsichore", Capt Dfruvandvis (sic), 26 guns, in port-broadside view; "La Blond" (sic), Capt Kayce, 36 guns, in port-quarter view; "Brilliant" (who had taken ‘Blonde’), Capt Loggie, 36 guns, port-bow on, and "Pallas" (who had taken ‘Terpsichore’), Capt Clements, 36 guns, in port-broadside view.

Union Flags are mounted above French colours on the ensign staffs of all three of Thurot’s frigates, clearly demonstrating their capture. The six ships are shown lying in Ramsey Bay in the island’s north-east, where Elliot temporarily brought his French prisoners and re-fitted. The time of day must therefore be some time after the actual fighting, which took place further to the west in the open sea between the Mull of Galloway and Man’s Jurby Head. The artist, Wright, is noted as having been on board the ‘Belleisle’ sketching in the aftermath of the battle.

The original oil is in the collection of the Manx Museum (accession no. 1954-7451).
