The Battle of Bishops Court, 28 February 1760: the commencement of the action

Inscribed: “To Captain Elliot and the rest of his Gallant Officers these Prints (a little Monument) of their decisive Victory, Over the Enterprising Monsieur Thurot (off the Isle of Man) the 28th of February 1760, are most humbly Inscribed by Gentlemen Your most Humble Servant Richard Wright. Engraved from the Original Painting Drawn from the Real Ships by Permission of Capt Elliot, in the Collection of a Noble-man.”

The six frigates that fought in this decisive British victory during the Seven Years’ War are shown heavily engaged in a choppy sea, with a low coastline faintly visible at extreme right. ‘Brilliant’ is on the left hand side of the group of four ships in the foreground; ‘La Blonde’ is on the right hand side. ‘Aeolus’ and ‘Marshall Belleisle’ are depicted further back on the right. The whole is set against the rays of a sun still low in the sky, which suggests that the moment depicted is one near the commencement of the action, which began at approximately nine in the morning and lasted for around ninety minutes.

An original oil of this scene by Wright was sold at Christie’s South Kensington in May 2012 (sale 6104, lot 33).
