The Battle of Dogger Bank, 5 August 1781

Inscribed: “A Representation of the engagement on the Dogger Bank on 5th of August 1781, between the British Fleet under the Command of Admiral Hyde Parker, and the Dutch Fleet under the Command of Admiral Zoutman. The Dutch Fleet being something superior to the British, lay too [sic] to Leeward, and waited Adml Parker’s attack, which commenced about 7 o Clock in the Morning, and lasted with great bravery on both sides till near Noon, when the Dutch bore away for the Texel; their whole Convoy being prevented from proceeding on their Voyage to the Baltick [sic], while a valuable Fleet under Convoy of Adml Parker, Sailed triumphantly into the British Ports. NB This View exhibits the British Admiral engaged with the Dutch Admiral and his two seconds; the Princess Amelia the Admiral’s Second coming in to his Assistance, with the Berwick Coming down to rejoin the Line. NB Several other Dutch Frigates came into Action and seconded their Line”; with details of the British and Dutch fleets to left and right respectively.

‘Fortitude’, commanded by Vice-Admiral Hyde Parker, is shown slightly right of the centre of the picture.
