A View of His Majesty's Ship Mediator of 44 Guns... In Chace [sic] of the Menagere, The Eugene hawling [sic] her Wind on the approach of the Mediator
This print shows the British Mediator, in the centre of the picture, with cannon smoke issuing from her port guns as she fires at the French naval flute Menagere, on the right of the picture. Menagere, shown in port broadside view, is under full sail, on a starboard tack, bearing away from the wind. On the left of the picture, the French storeship Eugene, also on a starboard tack, hauls her wind (tightens her sails) in an attempt to escape the Mediator. There are three other vessels on the far horizon, stated to be the Alexandre, the Dauphin Royal and a brig.
On the 12th December 1782, the 44-gun Mediator, under Captain John Luttrell, captured the French Menagere and two French storeships, the Eugene and the Alexander. Two other ships escaped. All were carrying stores and ordnance for North America.
