A Squadron standing along a Coast under an Easy Sail, a Cutter under the Stern of the Commodore for Orders [probably 'Defence']
Inscribed 'A Squadron standing along a Coast under an Easy Sail, A Cutter under the Stern of the Commodore for Orders. Most respectfully Inscribed to Andrew Mitchell Esqr. by this Obliged humble Servt Robert Dodd'. This picture is considered to represent the 'Defence' ,since Andrew Mitchell flew his broad pendant in this vessel when he was promoted commodore, after Sir Edward Hughes left the Cuddalore theatre of the East Indies command (in the War of American Independence) and peace with the French had been concluded, though it had just broken out again in February 1793 when the print was published.
