A View of the Frigates Stationed in the Hope under the Command of the Elder Brethren of the Trinity House
In 1803 several frigates commanded and crewed by Trinity House volunteers blockaded the Thames at Lower Hope as a defence against a threatened French invasion. Frigates had single gun decks which carried from twenty-four to thirty-eight guns. The frigate, a fifth or sixth rate vessel, was not expected to lie in the line of battle but was used for protecting British merchant vessels, capturing enemy merchant vessels and patrols.
