The Monarch engaging La Minerve and L' Armide: Sir Samuel Hood's engagement off Rochefort
This maybe the original for the aquatint by J. Clark & J. Hamble (PAH8049) depicting the same scene. Four naval ships, all in stern view, with smoke billowing between them, are engaged in battle. Several other vessels can be seen in the middle and far distance. This battle took place on 25th September 1806 off Rochefort.
The British Monarch, in the left foreground, is engaging the French Minerve, in the centre foreground, while the Armide and Gloire are just ahead. All three French ships were captured and added to the Royal Navy.
