Attack of St. Jean d'Acre: the Fleet going into action

This hand-coloured aquatint, taken by Knell from a drawing made by F.K. Hawkins on board the ship Pique, depicts the British fleet going into action at St Jean d’Acre on 3rd November 1840. The names of the ships are given below the picture. The Gorgon is shown in the centre left foreground of the picture, moving full ahead under steam with all her sails furled. Also prominently shown, front right, is the paddle steamer Phoenix, from on board which Admiral Robert Stopford commanded and observed the bombardment. The medium includes gum arabic.
