The packet 'Fidelia'
‘Fidelia’ is shown centrally in port-broadside view under sail, with a mountainous coastline in the distance at left. The main sails on her fore- and mainmasts have been clewed up, and the royals on all three masts reefed. The overall impression is of a vessel reducing speed as she approaches land. She is identified via her name on both the bow and pennant she flies from her maintop. On the foretop is the house flag of the Black Ball line.
The painting’s artist has not as yet been identified. Old file notes state it is signed W.J.K., although a full physical inspection would be required to confirm this.
Although ‘Fidelia’ was launched in 1845, the dating suggested here is based on the artist’s depiction of a 35-star American flag (in use 4 July 1863 – 3 July 1865). This is not contradicted by the Black Ball flag, as the line lasted until 1878.
