Departure of the U.S.S's Columbus and Vincennes from Jeddo Bay, July the 29th 1846
This is a coloured lithograph by S.F. Rosser after sketches by John Eastley. It shows the two American warships 'Columbus' and 'Vincennes' leaving Jeddo Bay on 29 July, 1846 (Jeddo and Yeddo being anglicisations of the town and port Edo, the former name for Tokyo), after the attempt to open up Japan to trade with the US failed.
Inscribed: 'DEPARTURE OF THE U.S.S.'s COLUMBUS AND VINCENNES from Jeddo Bay, July the 29th, 1846 (&c. &c.) To Commodore James Biddle this view of the Columbus and Vincennes in Japan is Respectfully Dedicated by his obedient humble servant SF Rosser.'
