English and French Fleets in Besika Bay

A depiction of the English and French fleets under the command of Vice-Admiral Sir Robert Stopford and Rear-Admiral Lalande anchored in Besika Bay in order to support Turkey after her defeat by the Egyptians in 1839. E. Chevalier discusses the incident in "Histoire de la Marine Française… de 1815 à 1870" on p.109, and it is also described by William Laird Clowes in Vol.6, "The Royal Navy: a history…" on p.309.

The 60-gun frigate 'Belle Poule', under the command of the Prince de Joinville – the ship that the following year would bring Napoleon's remains back to France from Saint Helena – is shown starboard-broadside on in the centre left of the picture. The other ships from left to right, as detailed in the inscription, are the British ships Bellerophon, Princess Charlotte (commanded by Vice-Admiral Sir Robert Stopford), Asia, Minden; and the French ships Belle Poule (commanded by the Prince de Joinville), Triton, Hercule, Iéna (commanded by Rear-Admiral Lalande), Généreux, Jupiter, Montebello (commanded by Admiral de la Susse) and Santi Petri.
