The Lady Kennaway off Margate, homeward bound in 1827
A hand-coloured aquatint of the three-masted 573 ton British East Indiaman ‘Lady Kennaway’, which made three voyages for the company between 1825 and 1829. Huggins depicts her homeward bound off Margate in 1827, with a view of the port in the background. She is approaching with the wind off her port quarter, her mainsail and forecourse furled to slow her speed. A fishing smack heels over off her port side and two seagulls skim the waves in the foreground, right. The artist helps to focus our attention on the ship and her destination by placing her between the slate grey of the English Channel and the pale turquoise waters further inshore. A band of bright foamy water echoes the white cliffs of home behind her.
