The snow Good Czar off Berwick-on-Tweed Lighthouse
This oil painting depicts the emigrant ship and merchantman ‘Good Czar’ off Berwick-upon-Tweed lighthouse, in a stiff breeze. The ‘Good Czar’ was a ‘snow’: a square-rigged vessel with two masts, complemented by a snow- or trysail-mast behind the main mast. A figure waves from a barge astern to her right, while two rowing boats deliver passengers to shore from her port side. Numerous figures cluster around the base of the lighthouse. The archive record states that this was 'painted about 1840'.
