To The East India and London Shipping Company (Limited) This Print of their Clipper Auxiliary Steamship Golden Fleece is dedicated by... Josiah Taylor
A coloured lithograph of the square-rigged, three-masted clipper auxiliary steamship ‘Golden Fleece’ which belonged to the East India and London Shipping Company, to whom the print was dedicated by the engraver Josiah Taylor. She is shown sailing left in a breeze that is just strong enough to cause small white caps on the waves. Streamlined and elegant under full sail, she appears to be making easy progress. Another square rigged vessel can be seen in the distance, left. The sun has broken through towering cumulus cloud to light a patch of water in the foreground. This device, which was much used by Dutch 17th century marine painters, has the effect of a reflection from the bright full sails, helping to focus our attention on the fine ship cutting through the water.
