Oil painting in the style of William John Huggins, entitled 'The ship Leonard'. The painting is signed and dated 1859 which, unless a misreading for 1839, puts it after Huggins's death (1845). The ‘Leonard’ was a purpose-built Mediterranean trading ship and was probably sold abroad in the early 1860s. This is a starboard broadside view of her heading out to sea in a strong breeze, with figures visible on deck along her length. Her dark, sleek hull and broad spread of sail almost fill the canvas. In the background, left, are white cliffs and a lighthouse, and on the right is an incoming ship. The painting entered the museum as part of the Macpherson Collection. Arthur George Holdsworth Macpherson (1873-1942) was an avid collection of maritime art and artefacts, whose collection of over 11,000 items was acquired for the National Maritime Museum by Sir James Caird in 1928.
