Portrait of the 'Mountagu'
This is a ship portrait, viewed from the port quarter. Its decorated ports, along the side of the vessel, are square. There is an inscription on a piece of paper which is pasted to the drawing in the lower left-hand corner: ‘de vergadt monetgu’ (The frigate ‘Montagu’).
Based on the style of the drawing, it might well date from later than 1661. It is probably not as late as van de Velde’s English period, however, so presumably this is another of those ships drawn at Chatham in circa 1661. Other drawings on the same paper are, however, clearly done in 1665.
