Portrait of the 'Schieland'
Portrait of the ‘Schieland’, 60 guns. She was built in 1666 and sold in 1694. The ship is viewed from the port quarter. On the tafferel, the arms of Schieland on a crowned shield supported by an eagle displayed. Over the arms is the date: 1666. Above this is the lion of the United Provinces on a shield. On the upper counter, a lion rampant on closed anchors represent the Admiralty of the Maas.
One of three drawings (see PAH9350 and PAH9351), probably best on offsets, but not in reverse, worked up in rapid but accurate pencil and light flat wash. It is approximately dated based on subjects and watermarks.
