A Maltese galley
A Maltese galley, freely drawn, viewed from before the starboard beam. The ship is alongside a wharf, with its sails brailed and sweeps out. There is a Maltese flag at the main and two others aft.
This drawing, a pair to Robinson PAH1901, is executed in rapid pencil and has every appearance of having been drawn on the spot. Based on style and subject matter, it seems that both drawings belong to van de Velde the Younger’s voyage to the Mediterranean in 1694-95.
